Background:

Born in Dunbar in 1838, John Muir emigrated to the United States when he was 11 years old. In his adopted country he pioneered what is now known as ecology. He is viewed as the “founding father “ of world conservation and helped to set up the first National Park.

In the UK, The John Muir Trust that takes his name is a charity that aims to make sure that “Wild Places are valued by all sectors of society, and Wild land is protected throughout the United Kingdom”.

The John Muir Award is the main educational initiative of the trust. Open to everyone, it encourages you to enjoy the outdoors, get to know more about wild places and do something to look after them by meeting 4 challenges: Discover-

Explore-Conserve-Share.

This website aims to share our experiences in meeting the 4 challenges during our trip to Ardnamurchan. We hope you enjoy it.

THE 4 CHALLENGES- use the buttons above to see what we did

Discover a wild place for yourself- we’ve chosen the area around Sanna Bay in Ardnamurchan

Explore your wild place- we’ll be climbing hills, exploring rocky shores and sandy beaches, using all our senses

Conserve- we’re following the Outdoor Access Code to minimise the impact of our time in the wild

Share - we’ll be telling our family & school friends about our experiences and sharing them on this website
